Was founded in May 1999 and named after Mount Kulal situated in Marsabit District in Northern Kenya. The founders were Mr Robert Glenie (British), Mr George Macknight(Scottish) and Dr Manuel Ogalo(Kenyan).

At inception, Kulal acquired the distributorship of products from Seven Seas Limited UK. Our key product at that time was Seven Seas Cod Liver oil in various pack sizes ranging from 100ml to 450ml. Our experience with sevens seas was that of growth, growth and more growth. This validated our strong belief that Cod Liver Oil going forward will remain our key product that will continue to bring smiles to the family. It did not, therefore, come to us as a surprise when we launched our own brand of Cod Liver Oil “Vita Health “. The product continues to enjoy the growth momentum experienced with seven seas and as such, we are optimistic about attaining the controlling share of the market of Cod Liver Oil in the region.

 

Commercial Invoice

Our first commercial invoice was registered on September 1st 1999 for the sale of Sevens Seas Cod Liver Oil 100ml, the only product we had at that time.

In 2001, Kulal signed a distribution agreement with Byk Golden, a German pharmaceutical manufacturer of Oral Dosage Forms. One of the products of interest to us was Pantecta (Pantropazole) Tablets.

Our search for distributorship with multinational companies continued and currently, we are proud to be the sole distributors in Kenya for Vita Health-Italy/Iceland, Cottons – Australia, Wisdom – Uk, Wisdom-Kenya, Lifestyles – Uk, Borg Pharmaceuticals – Egypt, Kendrion Group – Italy, Novell Pharmaceuticals – Indonesia, Mega Lifesciences-Thailand, Beauty Med – France and Alston Garrard – UK.

Team Building

Kulal has seen tremendous growth in both the number and diverse nature of the workforce. From a humble beginning of 4 employees, the company now boasts a total number of 50 employees engaged in various tasks and activities on a day to day basis. This has helped make the company to become what it is today.

Besides the diverse nature of the workforce, we also boast a very low staff turnover which is a good indication of stability and good working environment; an environment that promotes growth for both company and staff.

We are humbled to have with us (Mr. Fred Mutuku) staff since inception of the company in 1999. Discovery of Omega 3 fatty Acids in Cod Liver Oil
Dr. John Dyerburg a Danish doctor in the 1970’s, connected coronary diets based on cold-water oily fish to a low incidence of coronary disease among the Greenland Inuit. His work led to further studies on the health benefits of Omega3 fatty acids. This paved the way for the innumerable fish oil supplements seen on the market today.
The presence of Omega 3 fatty acids was discovered in both Cod Liver Oil and Fish Oils. The Discovery of Vitamins A & D in Cod Liver Oil
Since the 17th. Century, Cod Liver Oil was taken for the enormous health benefits that was derived from it. As early as 1841, Cod Liver Oil was already being used by German physicians in the treatment of rickets, rheumatism, gout and a form of tuberculosis known as serofula.
In 1912, Gosimen Funk, a biochemist from Poland, had a firm conviction that diseases such as scurvy, beriberi, pellagra and rickets was due to lack of some essential nutrients. He called them Vitamine or what is now known as Vitamin.
At this time Cod Liver Oil was already being used to treat rickets and many other diseases. For this reason, the product became instrumental in the nutritional research that led to the discovery of these vitamins.
In 1913, two researchers at the university of Wisconsin established the existence of an essential nutrient in Cod Liver Oil and called it Fat Soluble A.
In 1922, they discovered another vitamin in Cod Liver Oil, the anti-ricketic Fat Soluble D.

The Ethical Team

The family, our centre of focus at one time or another will require a prescription to be filled. It is for this reason that we have Q-pharm’s to directly interact with the family to provide/dispense quality Prescription only Medicines ( POM) according to the recommendation from the Family Physician. In support of Qpharm activities, Kulal Imports Prescription Only Medicines for distribution in Kenya. To this end, we have engaged a team of Medical Representatives herein referred to as the “Ethical Team”.

The Team leader is Dr. Joseph Kamama who also wears the arm band for Company Pharmacist in charge of regulatory affairs. The objective of the team is to provide leadership in accurate and prompt dissemination of information with regards to product features and benefits as received from our principals. The team is regularly updated on new developments on disease and management trends.

As mentioned earlier, whereas Qpharm gives us the opportunity to directly interact with the end-user, Team Ethical affords us the opportunity to directly interact with the doctors in order to share valuable information that helps in decision making with regards to disease trends and treatment protocols. The team also serves to gather and disseminate information upstream to our principals on such matters like government policy shifts in management of certain disease conditions.
